May 2025 Home Maintenance

While the rain is likely to grace us several times this month, we recommend getting started on the tasks below in between showers. Summer will be in full swing before you know it!

Interior To-Dos

  • Check the caulking around your kitchen and bathroom sinks and faucets to be sure it hasn’t degraded. Clean out under your cabinets so that if a leak develops, you’ll see it early. Overly stuffed cabinets can allow leaks to continue unnoticed.
  • Scrub your laundry room this season. This hardworking room is often taken for granted, so beyond regularly cleaning your washer and dryer, give the entire room a thorough cleaning. Move the machines in order to clean under and behind and don’t forget to have your dryer vent vacuumed – lint can build up and become a fire hazard!
  • Get your A/C checked. The recent heat wave gave us notice that this summer could be a toasty one. Now is a good time to have your system evaluated and any needed service performed.
  • Review your power strips to ensure they’re in optimal working order. While often a tool that we forget about, it’s smart to check them out for any dark marks around the plugs indicating it is compromised. Also make sure your power strip isn’t overloaded and if it is, reduce the number of items plugged into it to lessen your fire risk.

Exterior Focus

  • Check your outdoor lighting. Now that the winter weather has passed, it’s a good time to check for cracked or damaged fixtures or bulbs and replace as necessary.
  • Get grilling ready. Pull the grill out, scrub it to a shine, and ensure your cover is in good working order. Consider planting herbs that deter pests, like mosquitos, around your outdoor dining area so that you can eat in peace.
  • Add a relaxing porch feature. Planting colorful flowers in pots on your front porch is a great way to bring a happy feeling to your home for a low investment. If, like many of us, you cover or store your outdoor furniture in the off season, now is the time to pull it out and clean it up for seasonal use.
  • Patch your fence and pathways. Take a walk around your yard and note any issues with your fence. Replace boards and stain where necessary. Concrete pathways should be evaluated for tripping hazards as the winter freezes may cause pavers to rise or sink. Moss build-up is not uncommon on all surface types in our area, and if left unchecked it can result in a slippery surface. Clean where necessary.
