Quick Home Tasks This July

July is probably one of our favorite months – the weather is great, there is always something fun to do, and our area is simply beautiful. So, we’ll save the longer to-do list for the colder months when we’re all hibernating. For now, here’s some practical tips to keep your home in good shape while you focus on making the most of these long, fabulous, days.

Keep mosquitos at bay this summer by potting a few plants that will not only decorate your outdoor seating area but will also naturally deter these pests. Also check for any standing water around your property – even small amounts from heavy dew or water that’s collected from your sprinkler can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Create a firesafe landscape by raking up fallen leaves, pine needles and other ground detritus that could serve as fuel should a fire become an issue. Review what accelerants (gas for the mower, old paint, etc.) are stored in your garage and/or shed and make sure they’re properly contained. King County’s website has more information on how to properly dispose of what you don’t need anymore.

Make a decluttering plan that also includes the garage. Garage cleaning and organizing can become overwhelming very quickly, so instead of tackling the whole thing, pick a small area and focus on it. Identify your biggest pain points – for us it’s often tools – and focus on finding a system that works for those.

Throw some shade…in your yard that is. The temperatures are only going to go up, so now is a great time to consider shade options for sitting areas. It’s amazing the difference an umbrella, sail, or canopy can make when trying to remain cool on super hot days. Stay cool, Eastside!
