Top Considerations Before Undertaking an Outdoor Remodel

If you’re considering an addition to your home in the form of an outdoor living space, it might be good investment. Even if you consider selling down the road, according to Remodeling Magazine’s 2024 Cost vs. Value Report, you can expect up to 72% in return. In our area, here are the things you consider before embarking on the project:

Climate. Here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, we see a lot of water. Regardless of whether you’re near a lake, river, or in the trees, moisture is happening. If an outdoor remodeling project is on your mind, make sure your design takes weather into account and that you select materials that can withstand the wet we’re surrounded by much of the year. Stone countertops are a client favorite in these spaces and are weather friendly, too.

Lifestyle. Make a list of what you want to do in this outdoor space so we can help you create the very best design for your family. Want to use it year-round? Then a heat source and weather protection should be a consideration. If you desire an additional entertainment space, you may want to include all the bells and whistles like a built-in covering that includes an outdoor kitchen, cooking surface, and more.

Location. While we typically recommend a covered outdoor living room to be adjacent to your home for both ease of use and proximity, be honest with yourself about your lot and location. If there is a lot of road noise, will you enjoy sitting next to said road, or is there another location that might bring more peace and tranquility? If you have a great feature, like a pool or sport court, this might be the perfect spot to put your covered outdoor living space adjacent to.

Size & Layout. This component ties back to your lifestyle and the elements you’ve determined are important to you. Ensure there’s space to accommodate friends and family and provides a comfortable respite outside of your home. Consider it an extension of your living space.

Style. Choose materials and a design that complements your home’s style. There’s no reason not to be creative, just be thoughtful to ensure it will blend seamlessly.

Cooking Elements & Storage Needs. Give some thought into whether you intend just to cook outside, or if you’d like to prep there as well. If you intend to prep outside, a sink and refrigeration makes sense as does storage for tools, pans and spices. We always recommend a garbage and recycling cabinet which can make clean-up easier.

Finally, consider whether you’d like to include a fan for air movement in the space as well as varying levels of light for evening entertaining.
