Top Laundry Room Features for Smart Homeowners

Laundry is a chore that never ends. The clothing you’re wearing right now is going into the bin at the end of the day to be washed, folded and once again put away. Then the cycle starts all over again. The least you deserve is a laundry environment that serves you so you can complete this recurring chore with minimal fuss.

Good Lighting

Even if you like doing laundry, heading to a dungeon…err, we mean, basement or the garage…is not anyone’s idea of a good time. We suggest your laundry space have sufficient overhead lighting, such as recessed canned lights, so you can see stains or spots that need to be handled before throwing your items into the machine. Undercabinet task lighting is also a great idea for this room, while a pendant light is suggested over a sink or other work surfaces.

Sufficient Storage
Storage is king, especially in this catch-all room. We recommend clients install cabinets with doors to house laundry bins so that clutter doesn’t overtake a typically petite space. Also, be sure you have sufficient shelving or cabinets for cleaning products and rags. If your space allows room for a “put away zone”, use a laundry basket for each family member that can hold clean clothes that are ready to be put away.

Efficient Appliances

Washers and dryers use a lot of natural resources in terms of water and energy. Selecting energy efficient appliances can help reduce your carbon footprint while taking advantage of the monetary savings they afford.

Smart Selections

We love tile or laminate flooring in a laundry room remodel because both are easy to clean and are durable materials, suitable for this hardworking room. Choose a countertop material that is non-porous, like quartz, that not only looks neat and clean, but also will last long into the future. If your laundry room includes a sink, stainless steel models often come with deep basins that are great for soaking clothing, and they easily wipe clean.

Functional Design

We think folding counters, a hanging bar for hang-to-dry items, and room for other laundry related tools, like an ironing board, are no brainers for a well-designed laundry room. Assuming space allows this is also a great spot to include a dog wash station, pet food station, a litter box, and/or storing seasonal clothing.
