The Role of the Kitchen in a Whole Home Remodel
Many think a kitchen remodel is just about aesthetics, but upgrading your kitchen can be integral to a functional home for day-to-day use, particularly for avid cooks. During specific months of increased use – think holiday season – dysfunction in the kitchen is especially apparent.
When undertaking a kitchen remodel for clients we are sure to discuss their future plans for their home. If they intend to stay long term and age in place, we’ll focus on solutions that are conducive to all ages and abilities. Similarly, we’ll discuss the need for storage, priorities for energy efficiency and the importance placed on the indoor/outdoor connection.
Most people are looking for increased storage, whether it’s in the form of taller or more efficient cabinetry. We highly recommend selecting quality fixtures and hardware as they will stand the test of time, while also providing good resale value should you decide to sell in the future. Energy efficiency comes into play with appliance selection as well as a quality lighting plan. We suggest different layers of light – task, overhead and specialty – in a kitchen remodel, which if chosen and used well can also offer energy savings. Many of our clients appreciate an easy care backsplash in the kitchen, either in slab or tile form, as messes can be easily wiped up. Similarly, durable flooring, like tile, is always a good option in the kitchen as this high traffic area is used by everyone in the home, even pets!
