Five Reasons to Add a Skylight to Your Next Remodel
Skylights are a great option to consider during a remodel because there are several benefits. It makes the most financial sense to include these when you’re undertaking a roof repair or full replacement and it’s always important to have a trusted, experienced contractor do the installation as poorly installed skylights can lead to unnecessary trouble.
Natural Light
If you notice your home feels dark, it might be time for a skylight. Skylights offer a natural light source (up to five times more than that of a window) in interior spaces where there previously was none. Especially in small spaces like hallways or bathrooms, this can be a huge improvement to the “cave like” feeling you may be experiencing. Natural light can offer mood boosting properties while keeping your circadian rhythm on track.
Energy Savings
Most skylights available are made with double or triple pane glass and have insulated framing and low-e coating. Those components will help bring you natural light without compromising energy efficiency. You’ll likely use less artificial light with a skylight, which is good for both your health and energy bill.
Ventilation
Assuming you choose an operable skylight – one that can be opened or closed – this can be a real boon to your home’s ventilation. Since hot air rises, on hot days opening it up can release stagnant air. For cooking odors in the kitchen, a well-placed skylight can allow odors to get outside, giving the air quality in your home a more neutral standing. Similarly, for locations with moisture, like bathrooms, extra moisture can escape reducing any potential damage to paint and other surfaces.
Privacy & Architectural Interest
Especially with today’s smaller lot sizes, skylights can be a great option for gaining natural light without sacrificing privacy from the neighbors. A win-win! If you’ve got a vaulted ceiling or other architectural point of interest, a skylight can be a great way to add light and highlight this feature while improving the feel of your space and possibly increase your home’s resale value in the future.
Customization
There are a variety of sizes and shapes available, though square, rectangular and round are most common. There are three basic types of skylights – fixed, operable, and tubular. Fixed skylights remain closed, while operable versions can be opened or closed either manually or via remote. Tubular options, like Solatube, use a smaller footprint and are better for letting natural light in while not allowing you to see the sky through them.
One of our most common pieces of advice for clients is not to opt for an oversized skylight – it can make small rooms feel smaller or overheated. Similarly, too small an opening can feel strange in a large space. In addition, skylights can help reduce mildew and mold from developing as sunlight inhibits both on exposed surfaces.
