Mosquito Warfare
Eking out the last of the daylight hours is one of our benefits here in the PNW. However, trouble with mosquitoes can make time on your deck a little less enjoyable. We’ve put together some tips to help you reduce the risk of getting bit:
- Get rid of standing water; it’s where they breed. If you have water features in your yard, choose a recirculating system.
- Cover up. They can’t bite if there’s no skin showing – long sleeve shirts, closed-toe shoes and long pants will help.
- Use a repellent. This is our least favorite option, but depending on how pervasive the problem is, might be the right solution for you.
- Purchase permethrin treated clothing or buy the spray and use on clothing, not on skin.
- Keep a fan running. Mosquitoes are not strong flyers and the air stream is like a gale force wind, keeping the air around you free of these pests.
- Light a citronella candle. Though citronella is only effective if you’re directly in the plume from a flame.
- Find a sunny spot. Mosquitos don’t love direct sunlight and are more likely to find you in a shady locale.
- Screen doors. If you’ve given up on the backyard, ensure the mosquitoes stay outdoors with a quality screen door that will allow for natural air flow, but limit bugs from entering the house.
Enjoy the outdoors!
