Santa’s Coming, Is Your Home Ready?

We are in for a super speedy couple of months – daylight is short and the holidays are upon us. We highly recommend staying on top of your home’s maintenance tasks this month because the changing weather can bring problems if not addressed. Here are the top five things we think you should focus on:

  1. Clean the gutters. The rain is back in force. Water, ice and tree debris can fill gutters and create problems. Now is the time to clean out your gutters and downspouts so they’re clear to allow water to flow away from your home.
  2. Have the chimney checked. Wood fireplaces should be checked for creosote build-up annually, and both gas and wood fireplace users should ensure their chimneys are in optimal condition. Birds and other furry friends can sometimes take up residence in the off season.
  3. Winterize and energy waste reduction. This is the time to disconnect any hoses that are still attached to outside faucets and cover them to avoid freezing. Cover crawlspaces so they aren’t a refuge for bugs and animals in the winter. Reseal around drafty window frames and use insulating curtains if you notice a temperature change when near them but you’re not yet ready to replace your windows. Consider adding insulation in the attic for improved comfort and energy efficiency. Insulate vulnerable pipes, especially those close to exterior walls, to lessen the chance of freezing in the cold temperatures. Finally, have your furnace evaluated by a professional – no one wants to deal with no heat on a cold day!
  4. Emergency prep. If you haven’t already, check your emergency kit and replace any batteries as necessary. Take stock of what you have and make a list of what needs replacement. Have your family members try on their winter gear and ensure everything is in working order and still fits. Candles, working flashlights, matches, granola bars, and extra blankets are always smart to have on hand should the power go out.
  5. Rotate your tools. This is one we often don’t think about until we’re struggling to pull out a shovel for the driveway or an ice scraper for the car on a wintery day. Yard maintenance season is basically over, so rotate out your lawn and yard tools for those more appropriate at this time of year.
